Party of Our Lady of the Candelaria
Every year in the first few days f February, the city of Puno is witness to one of the most colorful festivals in South America. Thousands of the devoted and a growing number of tourists fill the streets and pay homage to the patron saint “La Mamacha Candelaria”. This celebration dates back for centuries and is one of the main uniting factors between the citizens of Puno (irrespective of background), and the popular Fiesta de la Candela is an inherited tradition which heralds back to colonial times.
Today, the festivities involve rituals which are singular to this region of the Altiplano, and include the entire community in its explosion of color, faith and joy.
